A self-proclaimed golf game for people who don’t actually like golf, What The Golf is a physics puzzler that launched with the Apple Arcade. The premise is extremely simple, but also terribly silly.
You play as some sort of unknowable entity ball-flicker, a spot of gameplay known across the world to be universally pleasing. The momentum is incredibly satisfying when you’re smacking a golf ball towards the hole, but usually this isn’t the case.
You see, What The Golf’s developers don’t actually know a thing about golf, so you may be smacked with surprise when you end up ponting the protagonist, a vase, a sofa or even a television towards the goal, with a wild variety of modifiers to stop you in your tracks.
It could get by on it’s absurdity alone, but What The Golf’s greatest trick is that it eventually becomes quite the tricky puzzle game, shifting dimensions and creating delightfully daft criteria to complete each mission.
The overworld also offers some striking Undertale-level comedy and affords the player a number of compelling reasons to keep pressing through the narrative to find surprises and ridiculous new missions that will keep you giggling on your morning commute.
The Verdict – 4/5
