A new update in Destiny 2 suggests that Savathun, the titular Witch Queen in the game’s upcoming expansion and sister to Oryx, has taken human form in the Last City. And fans are freaking out.
As Destiny 2’s story has improved, players have gotten even more ravenous for details on upcoming story beats and expansions. So far, Season of the Splicer has told a mostly contained story about prejudice and refugees. But players discovered a new lore page on Tuesday that really escalated the threat in this Destiny 2 season, potentially setting up story beats for the upcoming expansion.
Savathun is a well-known trickster, working primarily in lies and deception — think Loki, but much more gross and possessed by a giant worm. She was behind all the major events in the Forsaken expansion, and has been quietly playing puppet master behind Destiny events for years. And because of her title, the Witch Queen, fans know she’s bound to be the subject of Destiny 2’s next expansion, coming early 2022.
Despite her involvement, it’s rare to get a glimpse of her or feel her presence, but the new lore book is from her perspective. We know — based on some in-game dialogue from Ikora Rey, a Guardian Vanguard — that the endless night the Last City is experiencing in Season of the Splicer is the work of the Vex Mind Quria, Savathun’s No. 1 goon. The voice in the lore not only mentions the Worm God inside her — proof enough that it’s Savathun — but also takes responsibility for the endless night.
In the lore page (called Ripe and taken from the Beneath the Endless Night book), Savathun talks about possessing a “conspicuous” form and that the “people here grant me many affordances.” She then goes on to describe how her worm is doing — hungry, as always — and gets rather gross around how her possession is holding up. At one point she vomits black ooze into the air.
There are a few reasons this gross book is garnering a lot of attention from Guardians. First, Savathun has infiltrated the Last City, which Guardians consider to be the safest space in the galaxy. But perhaps more interestingly, it lends credibility to a popular fan theory: that the Guardian Osiris is actually Savathun in disguise.
Destiny fans have had their eye on Osiris for a few seasons now. There’s a load of evidence that the famous Guardian isn’t who he says he is, but it all comes down to the events that started Season of the Hunt. In Beyond Light’s launch season, Osiris’ Ghost, Sagira, got killed, and the Guardian lost his Light. Since then, he’s been a little off. That could be because he’s now grappling with mortality, the loss of his super powers, and a friend he’s had for centuries. Or it could be because Osiris never came back at all after he lost Sagira.
The Ripe lore book suggests that Savathun is someone people trust and recognize. And in the same week that the lore page dropped, Ikora decided to trust Osiris — and only Osiris — with her archive of secrets. It’s a troubling combo to be sure, and despite being exiled from the Last City prior to the original Destiny, he’s currently one of the most experienced and trusted Guardians out there.
We don’t know if Osiris is Savathun or if Osiris is just going through a crisis. But what we do know is that the Witch Queen is closer than ever before, and being more brash than she has been over the past few years. Most importantly, this new evidence — alongside a potential Old Chicago tease for Witch Queen — is really starting to hype fans up for next year’s expansion.
