UK Retailer CEX Is Buying PS5s For £150 Over RRP And Essentially Scalping

UK retailer CEX is offering customers more than they paid for the Xbox Series X and then attempting to sell them for a tidy profit.

Chances are you don’t need us to tell you that next-gen consoles have been hard to come by. Wherever you are in the world, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X has sold out incredibly fast. In fact, for the most part, anyway, both consoles sold out long before they were ever officially released. Yesterday marked the release of the PS5 in the UK where gamers have had a particularly hard time getting their hands on one.

That even goes for those who thought they had landed a preorder two months ago. People all over the UK have been reporting that Amazon has delivered various different items in the PS5’s place. Everything from coffee machines to cat food. As for those who didn’t manage to find one, there are options, but it’s going to cost them.

CEX is a British retailer that sells used electronics, consoles, and games. Chances are some gamers will have tried their luck on the site even though it seems unlikely that anyone would want to trade in a Series X or PS5 already. However, considering the deal CEX is offering, you might well find a console on the site for the taking.

The trouble is, what CEX is doing feels a lot like professional scalping. As can be seen in the screenshot above, CEX is offering £550 for a boxed Series X. That’s £100 more than the console’s RRP in the UK. It is then proceeding to sell them for £690, a more than 50% mark up on what they can be bought for when available in stores.

It’s doing something similar with boxed PS5s, offering £600 to buy them and selling them on for £750. That’s an extra 66% on top of the console’s RRP. Interestingly, it doesn’t appear to be doing the same thing with the Series S or the digital edition of the PS5, at least not yet. With so few next-gen consoles to go around right now, it seems likely that some gamers hungry to enter the next-gen will be cashing in on CEX’s offer.
