The world's worst Sonic The Hedgehog game is back on Xbox and no one knows why

The 2006 Sonic The Hedgehog reboot is available to buy again but certainly not as a result of public demand.

While the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise is no stranger to bad video games, 2006’s Sonic The Hedgehog for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 remains one of the most infamous entries in the blue blur’s history.

The game was delisted from digital storefronts and retailers back in 2010 and, nowadays, Sega and the fanbase would like to pretend it never existed. Yet, like a zombie rising from its grave, the game is available for purchase again.

At some point recently, both Sonic 06 (as it’s colloquially known) and its associated DLC were added back to the Xbox Marketplace, the digital store for the Xbox 360.

This means the game isn’t backwards compatible with the Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S. Although we can’t imagine Microsoft ever supporting it to run on its newer hardware, considering its reputation.

As such, you need an Xbox 360 in order to play it. Not that you should want to. That said, it’s going for the low, low price of £3.39, which is almost worth it to experience first-hand one of the lowest points in Sonic’s career (key word being ‘almost’).

If you’re a younger fan and are unfamiliar with Sonic 06, it’s a contender for not just one of the worst games in the series, but one of the worst games ever made.

It was universally panned and ridiculed for the unfinished state it released in, plus its poor visuals and po-faced time travel story.

It left a blemish on Sonic’s reputation that took him years to recover from and it remains easy low-hanging fruit for critics of the franchise to point and (deservedly) laugh at.

People seem to have long moved on from it, but that’s partly because they found new blunders to make fun of. Seven years later in 2014, Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric made almost all the same mistakes again (unfinished, buggy, poor visuals, boring gameplay) and lest we forget the original design for Sonic in the 2020 live action movie (seriously, we wish we could forget it).

If you’re just that curious, Sonic 06 can be found here on the Xbox Marketplace, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

At the time of writing, Sega hasn’t commented on the game’s re-emergence. We almost suspect this to be some kind of error and wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft delisted it again.

What’s even weirder is that better Sonic games are right round the corner. Sonic Origins, a compilation of Sonic’s beloved Sega Mega Drive games, is out next month.

Maybe this is some weird marketing campaign to make Sonic Origins more appealing? Probably not, but you may as well save that £3.29 and put it towards Sonic Origins. Or a ticket for the second live action movie, which is still in cinemas.
