Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch has sold over 15.7 million copies, officially passing Street Fighter II's 15.5 million to become the best-selling fighting game of all time.As reported by Digital Trends, Nintendo revealed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold this impressive number in its half-year financial report ending September 30, 2019.
Street Fighter II originally launched in 1991 and proceeded to release seven unique versions following it taking the world by storm.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which released on December 7, 2018, sold over 11 million in its first three weeks and has continued to be a success with its post-launch support that have seen such characters added as Banjo-Kazooie, Joker, and the Hero from Dragon Quest.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also passed Super Mario Odyssey's 15.38 million and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's 14.54 million to become the second best-selling game on Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still holds the number one spot with over 19.01 million copies sold.
Furthermore, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has also become the best-selling fighting game series ever with sales of over 53.03 million copies since the release of Super Smash Bros. for N64 in 1999. "In comparison, total sales for Tekken, Dragon Ball, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat are all between 45 million to 47 million."Nintendo Switch has also seen continued success with over 15 million units being sold in North America and a 20% sales increase year-over-year as compared to 2018.
Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury will be the next character to join Smash Ultimate's roster, and the momentum won't stop there as more DLC characters will be released following the end of the first Fighters Pass.
