Rockstar Games has revealed great news this week in connection with two of their biggest franchises.
A new Red Dead Redemption 2 Online update is being teased for this Summer and many fans are hoping for a launch later this month.
And the latest information shared by Rockstar Games this week confirms why there is a big incentive to continue offering new content.
While RDR2 and Red Dead Online have little hope of catching the success of GTA 5, it has laid down a great marker for any sequel to follow it.
Red Dead publisher Take-Two Interactive has confirmed this week that RDR 2 has now sold over 25 million copies.
That’s the total achieved since it was released in October 2018 and has climbed since the last sales report from Take-Two in 2019.
Another one million copies have been sold since the last update in May, providing a great level of growth for Take-Two.
The company also confirmed that the largest contributors to Net Bookings in fiscal first-quarter 2020 were Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K19, the Borderlands franchise, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online, Social Point’s mobile offerings, WWE SuperCard and WWE 2K19, and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
And if those games are being ranked in order of impact, it’s safe to say that Red Dead Online has a long way to go to catch up with the bigger multiplayer modes and titles.
The good news is that the new Summer update is still on track to arrive in the coming weeks and will no doubt bring some gamers back to RDO.
And it appears more stuff is being planned for 2019, with Take-Two telling Venturebeat: “Both engagement and recurrent consumer spending on the game continue to gain momentum, and Rockstar plans to continue to enhance and evolve the world of Red Dead Online with ongoing updates to drive growth over time.”
This was followed by another statement released by Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two, which reads: “Fiscal 2020 is off to a terrific start with first-quarter operating results that beat our expectations.”
“We delivered significant Net Bookings and cash flow growth driven by the performance of Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K19, the Borderlands franchise, and Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online.
“As a result of our better-than-expected first-quarter operating results and increased forecast for the balance of the year, we are raising our outlook for fiscal 2020, which is anticipated to be another great year for our organization.
“We aim to build on this strong start by delivering a robust array of titles throughout the year, including Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, NBA 2K20, Borderlands 3, WWE 2K20 and The Outer Worlds, as well as new and innovative ways for consumers to remain engaged with their favourite entertainment experiences.”
And there is plenty of evidence to suggest that Rockstar Games could launch the big Summer expansion before the end of August. Having gone silent on the subject for weeks, Rockstar Games provided an update last week, following the launch of the new Casino content in GTA Online.
Telling fans that the new update was “Coming Soon,” they added: “Later this summer, the world will evolve again with the introduction of specialist roles – unique paths of progression, each providing their own experience with tailored gameplay elements and benefits that will allow players to become even more deeply connected to their character and the choices they make as they inhabit the world of Red Dead Online.
“This fundamental change points to the long term future of Red Dead Online – a world where players coexist in an uneasy peace, choosing to band together or striking out alone, fighting to survive in a world full of threats and opportunities as they build a life for themselves on the frontier.”
It’s likely that we will hear more about this new expansion before it lands, so there’s a chance of a new trailer dropping either this week or the next.
