Puyo Puyo Tetris 2’s New Trailer Shows Off Its Various Game Modes

Are you ready to drop more blocks and pop more puyos? Sega sure hopes you are, because a brand new trailer for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 has been released and it gives us a quick look at the various game modes that will be available in its unexpected sequel. In addition to the extensive adventure mode that the single-player component will have, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will have a range of online options and offline multiplayer modes to keep competitive fans satisfied.

The first of these new modes is “Skill Battle.” Partially touched on with the last trailer, Skill Mode will let players assemble a team of heroes and level them up in a similar fashion to an RPG. With everyone’s unique skills able to be deployed in battle, it should make for a satisfying way to track your progress while you break tetrominoes and um…squish puyos? What the hell is a puyo?

As for the online options, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will feature a series of online leagues that will separate game modes based on your preferred type of puzzler. There will be a “Tetris League,” “Puyo Puyo League,” and “Skill Battle League.” That last one is a combination of the two that will push your reactive skills to the test. If you just want to kick back online, though, a Free Battle option will get rid of rankings and let you experience a more casual atmosphere.

One interesting thing Sega subtly announced is that Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will have post-launch content updates. Alongside DLC packs, there are plans to add extra characters, new game features, and more. It’s not the most descriptive of post-launch plans, but it sounds like fans will be getting a lot from their purchases.

If you’re ready to buy Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, digital pre-orders are currently available for PS4 and Xbox One. Physical pre-orders should be available later today for all platforms, which include Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X. If you purchase the current-generation version, you’ll receive a free upgrade to the PS5 or Series X version whenever you get one of the new consoles. It may not be completely necessary, but it’s a nice gesture.
