Pokémon: The Crown Tundra DLC has secret legendaries – here's where to find them

Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra DLC is out now and diehard fans have already uncovered some extra legendary pokémon.

Although Pokémon Sword and Shield’s second DLC expansion, The Crown Tundra, has only launched today, fans thought they already knew about all the pokémon in the game – but it turns out there are some surprises.

Turns out that developer Game Freak has kept a few cards close to its chest, as players are discovering even more legendary pokémon that can be acquired outside of the new Dynamax Adventures feature.

Since the DLC is brand-new, be advised that there are massive spoilers below, so if you intend on playing the DLC and want to discover these secrets for yourselves, turn away now.

Firstly, there are two legendary pokémon related to The Crown Tundra’s poster pokémon Calyrex.

As you advance the DLC’s story you will obtain Carrot Seeds, which can either be planted in one of two locations: a snowy field or a cemetery.

Depending on which area you choose a different horse legendary will appear: Glastrier the Ice type for the ice area or Spectrier the Ghost type for the cemetery.

After battling whichever one appears, Calyrex will then fuse with it, riding it like a steed and becoming either Ice Rider Calyrex (Ice/Psychic) or Shadow Rider Calyrex (Ghost/Psychic).

Capturing it in this form will earn you both pokémon, which can be unfused and fused using a special item called the Reins of Unity, which you’ll have already acquired at this point.

This actually isn’t the first time pokemon fusion has been possible in the series. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, the legendary Kyruem could be fused with either Reshiram or Zekrom to become a new pokémon entirely.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to catch both horse pokemon on the same save file. Whichever one you don’t pick will need to be acquired via trading.

These aren’t the only legendaries available in the wild, either. While you probably already know about the Galar forms of the original three legendary birds, Serebii has discovered another legendary trio that can be found.

After encountering pokemon professor Sonia, footprints can be spotted in various areas, which have been left behind by Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, which first appeared in Pokémon Black and White and can also be caught in the Dynamax Adventures.

By finding 50 of each type of footprint, you will cause one of these pokemon to spawn in a specific area: Cobalion in Frigid Sea, Terrakion in Lakeside Cave, and Virizion in Giants Bed.

Catch all three and you can take them to a small island on Ballimere Lake to make the mythical Keldeo appear – a pokémon that can’t be found in the Dynamax Adventures – by simply making a curry.

Lastly, another mythical pokémon can be given to you by an old woman in Freezington after clearing the main story and it’s Cosmog from Pokémon Sun and Moon.

It’s only level 5 and has just two moves – Splash and Teleport – so you’ll need to train it up if you’re going to use it in battle.

Level it up enough and it will eventually evolve into either the legendary Solgaleo (in Sword) or Lunala (in Shield), both of which can also be caught in the Dynamax Adventures.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are available on Nintendo Switch.
