Pokémon Sword & Shield: A Guide To Adventure 3 In Crown Tundra

Looking to grab yourself a few new Legendaries? Luckily, there are quite a few of them scattered around the Crown Tundra, with various quests given to you to help you on your way. One of these is Legendary Clue #3, also known as “A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three!” which tasks you with finding the Galarian variants of the Legendary Birds: Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.

After arriving at the Crown Tundra, you’ll be able to start this quest, along with two others. Here’s everything you need to know about completing Legendary Clue #3 and netting yourself three new Legendary Pokemon.

How to Activate the Quest

This quest is activated in the same way as the other two. Simply head to the Crown Tundra for the first time. After exiting the train station, you’ll initiate a cutscene with Peony and his daughter, Peonia. You’ll be tasked with meeting Peony in his cabin in Freezington where, once you arrive, he’ll share the Legendary Clues with you.

Now, you’re ready to begin on any of them in whichever order you like. All three can be completed simultaneously or however you like.

The Dyna Tree

To really begin the Legendary Birds questline, you’ll need to head out of Freezington and toward that giant red tree you can probably see on the horizon. This is the Dyna Tree, and it’s the place that many Pokemon flock to, as mentioned in the Legendary Clue.

Once you arrive, a cutscene will begin. It’ll show a brief skirmish between Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. After their hostility, they’ll fly off and leave you behind. Peony will ring you and let you know that you have to chase them down in different parts of Galar.

Where to Find Articuno

The first and easiest bird to find is most likely going to be Articuno for most people. It remains in the Crown Tundra, flying around the various areas and hanging around the south of Freezington and the immediate area.

As you approach Articuno, it’ll create duplicate copies of itself that spin as they fly toward you. The real Articuno can be spotted as it waves its wing. Head toward the real one and a battle will begin. If you choose one of the clones, the real Articuno will fly away and you’ll have to chase it down again.

Articuno’s Galarian form is actually Psychic/Flying-type, not Ice like Articuno’s original variant. This means it’ll take damage from hail, so be careful where you encounter it— if it’s snowing in the overworld, it’ll hail in battle.

Where to Find Zapdos

If you’re looking for Zapdos, grab a Corviknight Taxi back to the mainland of Galar. Zapdos will be found running around at breakneck speeds in the good old Wild Area. If you enter from the Meetup Spot, you’ll see it right away. It runs all over the main southern half of the Wild Area (it doesn’t seem to cross over into Bridge Field and toward Hammerlocke).

It’s difficult to avoid other Pokemon popping up in your path, meaning you’ll run into them and start a battle. Zapdos doesn’t keep running during this, luckily, but it can be a frustrating time-waster. It’s a good idea to speak with the Watt Trader about upgrading your bike’s speed if you want to catch Zapdos.

Once you finally manage to catch up to it, the battle will begin. Zapdos has traded its Electric/Flying-type combo for Fighting/Flying. As with Articuno, you might encounter Zapdos in an area with adverse weather effects that could harm it in battle, so be careful.

Where to Find Moltres

Arguably the hardest bird to catch up to is Moltres, which fled off to the Isle of Armor. It soars extremely fast and you can basically never catch up to it, meaning you’ll have to try and guess its path and cut it off. It flies in what seems to be a predetermined route, including over some bodies of water, so you’ll need to try and get ahead of it.

A good spot to try and do this is where it flies from the Workout Sea to the land near the Master Dojo. This is both a predictable path and near the beginning of its flight pattern. Trying to cut it off can also be difficult given the many cliffs and other natural barriers of the Isle of Armor that Moltres can soar right over (but you sadly cannot).

Once you manage to encounter it, the battle will start. Galarian Moltres is not a Fire-type as its appearance might suggest. Rather, it’s Dark/Flying, meaning its immune to both Ground-type moves (like the other two) and Psychic-type moves. Once again, be wary of weather effects.

Return to Peony

Once you’ve caught all three birds, you can return to Peony’s cabin to give him an update on your progress. Don’t worry if you knocked them out in battle — they’ll respawn and you can try again.

Peony will be ecstatic that you managed to track these birds down, and he’ll mark the clue complete. If you’ve already finished Clues #1 and #2, you will trigger the beginning of a strange mysterious fourth quest that will result in the ability to find the Ultra Beasts in the Max Lair.

If you haven’t completed the other two Legendary questlines, you’ll need to finish those first before the secret fourth one. However, if it’s all done, carry on to the next part of your adventure.

Bonus: Find the Kantonian Birds

If you’re an originalist who prefers the original variants of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, never fear. The Kantonian variants of the Legendary Birds are not a part of the Legendary Clue quest, but they can be encountered in the Crown Tundra as well.

When participating in a Dynamax Adventure, the Kantonian forms of each bird is a possible final boss Legendary at the end of the route. There’s no way to force this (unless you’ve encountered them before and asked the scientist to record their location), so keep trying until you get them.
