Pokemon GO's September update just went live and although it means that trainers can no longer catch Raikou, the update has brought with it a series of brand new Field Research Quests.
Complete enough of these to earn yourself a Research Breakthrough and a crack at catching the Legendary Pokemon Entei.
However, these Research Quests also offer players the chance to catch some very rare Pokemon, including a new variation for Pokemon GO's Spinda.
But whilst these new Pokemon are taking the spotlight, players are also searching for Shiny versions of some of Pokemon's most classic mascots – which can actually be quite hard to come by.
Keep reading for the most up to date information on how you can go about catching a Shiny Magikarp, with the end-goal of netting yourself a Shiny Gyarados.
Plus, further down the page you'll also find all of the new September Field Research Tasks.
Since Magikarp is pretty much USELESS, here's a bit of handy information about it's evolved form, Gyarados, courtesy of the Pokemon GO experts at PokemonGOHub.
"It is one of the most useful attackers in the game, and arguably the non-legendary WATER type alternative to Kyogre.
Even though it takes 400 candies to evolve a Magikarp into a Gyarados, Magikarp candy is easier to obtain than Kyogre candy, which makes it more resource-efficient"
At the time of writing, there are quite a few ways to encounter Magikarp in Pokemon GO. And that means your variety of ways of encountering a Shiny Magikarp are also increased.
For those wondering it's not possible to encounter a Shiny Gyarados in the wild. So, the question then becomes, how can you encounter a Shiny Magikarp?
To try and make things easy we've broken this down into the four main ways you might normally encounter a Shiny Magikarp.
Egg Hatches: At the time of writing, Magikarp is not hatching from any of the games eggs. This may change in the future though.
Raid Battles: That said, you can encounter Magikarp in raids for the time being. It is currently listed a Tier 1. Remember though, you won't know if it's a shiny until after you've defeated it and gone into the encounter screen.
In the Wild: Whilst rare, you can encounter the Pokemon in the wild with the possibility of finding a shiny. But Silph Road research suggests there's about a 1/450 chance of encountering a shiny. To boost your chances, head over to the Silph Road Global Nest Atlas to find your nearest Magikarp nest.
September Field Research: You can also encounter Magikarp and a potential shiny from one Field Research Task in September.
To trigger an encounter with a Magikarp you need to spin PokeStops until you receive the 'Catch 10 Pokemon' quest. Complete the task and cross your fingers the Magikarp you encounter is Shiny.
When you do find that Shiny Magikarp you will need a whopping 400 candy to evolve it into that special red Gyarados.
