Design director Drew Murray is leaving Microsoft’s The Initiative after just over two years working at the studio. The announcement was made in a Twitter thread citing personal reasons.
“It’s been extraordinary working shoulder-to-shoulder with such a talented and experienced team, many of whom are great friends now,” wrote Murray, “but my life outside of work needs more attention and headspace than I have been able to give it lately, so I’m stepping down from my role.”
Murray joined The Initiative back in November of 2018 after working at Insomniac for over a decade. In the Twitter thread, he said he had no idea that he’d be working on a Perfect Dark reboot when he joined the studio.
“Two years later, we announced the franchise with a trailer that still gives me goosebumps. Most importantly, the team has the vision and talent to knock the game and franchise out of the park.”
Xbox head Phil Spencer thanked Murray for his efforts in building The Initiative and wished him the best in all his future endeavors.
A Perfect Dark reboot was announced at last December’s The Game Awards with a trailer showing a likely future where the world is ravaged by a climate apocalypse. Megacorporations have become so powerful that they seem to be the only hope for human survival, but as is so often the case in games with an anti-corporate bent, those megacorps are up to no good.
Following the trailer reveal, Murray talked about how he planned to set Perfect Dark apart from all the other first-person shooters out there.
“One of the things we thought about was how to differentiate what we call ‘spy fighting’ versus what you’d see in a traditional first-person shooter,” said Drew. “Sliding under things, jumping over things–we really wanted to play up the physicality and being in the world, getting some of that camera movement that we see watching body cameras, GoPros, and trying to get that excitement of moving in places and in ways that you and I don’t.”
Perfect Dark still doesn’t have a release date, but stay tuned.
