It’s May, which means the Overwatch Anniversary event is back. This year, the festivities kick off May 18 and run until June 8.
Among the new skins we have a disco inspired Baptiste, which seems to already be the fan favourite. Characters also look set to get new dances, a call-back to the first ever Anniversary event, all the way back in 2017.
Of course, the Anniversary event also means that all previous event-exclusive skins will return. In the short teaser trailer, we got a look at some old fan favourites, including lifeguard Pharah and Grillmaster 76.
2021 marks the fifth anniversary for Blizzard’s team based FPS. It may also be the last one of its kind, as it is possible that Overwatch 2 could see a 2022 release. There is no official release date for the sequel, but Blizzard has said it’s unlikely to launch this year.
Incidentally, the Anniversary event will coincide with a planned livestream on the PlayOverwatch YouTube channel. This livestream will give fans a look at Overwatch 2’s PvP gameplay. On top of this, the stream will show off new maps and talk through the game’s development process.
Overwatch 2 will feature both PvP and PvE gameplay, and appears to be much more plot focused. It will link heavily with its predecessor, as all progress will carry over into the new title, and the two games will have cross-play functionality for PvP.
Overwatch released back in May 2016, and is available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
