Pirates are always in style. That’s why Sea of Thieves is so successful and why everyone seems to be making a pirate game these days. So how will King of Seas set itself apart in a metaphorical ocean of pirate games?
For starters, King of Seas is more of an action RPG version of a pirate game. It’s less about leading the life of an individual pirate and more about leading the life of your ship. You’ll have five classes to choose from, including the quick and slippery sloop, the shapely and spacious flute, the rugged and dependable brig, the stately and military-focused frigate, or the massive and imposing galleon.
Once you’ve picked your class, next comes customization. With 900 items to choose from, no two ships will look alike. Not only that, but the procedurally-generated world will ensure that no two playthroughs will be exactly alike either, giving King of Seas almost roguelike replayability.
But King of Seas is no roguelike. The world is persistent but dynamic, with player actions affecting naval routes and conquered settlements increasing the difficulty to ensure that the player is always challenged in their piratical adventure.
Exploration, trading, and an engaging story are all waiting in King of Seas. Originally set to release over the 2020 holidays, developer 3D Clouds decided to stay out of Cyberpunk’s way and release King of Seas this February instead.
The latest trailer gives us a release date of February 18 on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. There are also a few new details shared about King of Seas, such as a bounty system for whenever you sink an enemy captain.
“Each battle won will raise the bounty on your head and you can even face off against some of the most feared pirates in history,” writes 3D Clouds in their press release. “The difficulty level adds a multiplier to the bounty you achieve in the game—so see how far you can take it in hardcore mode!”
