With GTA 5 and GTA Online now over six years old, it comes as little surprise that there is so such clamor from Rockstar Games' fans to see a GTA 6 release date announced.
Or actually, just a GTA 6 announcement, in general, to be honest.
Despite how many Red Dead Redemption 2 updates you throw at them or rumours of a possible Bully 2 release, it always inevitably seems to come back to Grand Theft Auto.
And look, it's hard to argue against it, because GTA 5 has been such a runaway success, both in terms of it's lauded story and the never-ending array of genuinely fun GTA Online updates to boot.
But, with anticipation, naturally comes leaks. Because growing fan excitement coupled with Rockstar's patented policy of saying very little, inevitably leads to something of a vacuum that just has to be filled with something .
GTA 6 Rumours, Leaks and News
Whether it's rumours regarding release dates, characters, maps, settings, features, or even something as rudimentary as what platform it will arrive on (PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Scarlett or Google Stadia – Place your bets), something will fill the void.
That's why we were particularly struct quite recently by a piece written by Kotaku , which is certainly worth a gander if you are desperately awaiting that inevitable GTA 6 release.
It was posted a week back to coincide with GTA 5 having just turned six years old.
Writer Zack Zwiezen decided to turn back the clock to take a quick look at some of the most widespread rumours surrounding the game before it hit shop shelves.
All with a view to trying to discern how accurate some of them were and if they predicted anything remotely resembling the final product released by Rockstar in 2013.
And with two years between the games initial announcement trailer and eventual launch, you can imagine that there was plenty of rumours circulating.
"Six years is a long time and fans have become increasingly anxious and excited about a follow up to GTA V." explained Zwiezen.
"And as fans get more desperate for information and leaks, rumors about GTA 6 become more and more common.
"But should fans trust any of these rumors? How accurate were rumors about GTA V before the game was released?"
When will GTA 6 release?
13000+ VOTES SO FAR
The deep dive by Zwiezen takes a look at some of those most prevailing rumours, such as suggestions the game would have star a rookie cop as the lead character or potentially Albert De Silva , previously a Vice City character.
The piece also has a quick scan through the many, many leaked maps for GTA 5, and in fairness to Kotaku they call themselves out for covering some less than reputable sources and leaks of the time.
One or the more interesting takes by Zwiezen actually involves looking at those rumours which he describes as 'too good to be true' and sound familiar even today when discussing GTA 6.
Such as the idea of multiple cities (or time periods which would require multiple cities), which is currently one of the prevailing rumours regarding the next Grand Theft Auto instalment.
As we mention, it's a good read which we suggest all GTA fans have a look at when you get a spare minute.
But as you might imagine, the conclusion is anything but positive, especially when it comes to making fans feel any positivity regarding the state of GTA 6.
"Looking back at GTA V rumors, it turns out that most of them were entirely wrong. Which isn’t surprising. " summarised Zwiezen.
"Random rumours spread on forums and Twitter are hard to prove and easy to make up. And as hype for the next GTA continues to build, be careful about trusting rumors that might show up online."
"I get people being excited for GTA 6 but don’t let that excitement cloud your judgment. Take every rumor with a grain of salt and always assume random people on the internet are just trolling. Because often they are."
