Cyberpunk 2077: Every Grenade Type, Ranked

Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest hit game from CD Projekt Red and players are loving just about everything the combat has to offer. Shotguns are devastating up close, sniper rifle headshots ruin enemy lives, and the midrange weapons like pistols and assault rifles are just as deadly and fun. Combine these with hacking, and you’ve got a recipe for victory most of the time.

The reason that is “most” and not “all” of the time is, in part, due to the criminally underused grenades. Players are wise to pick a few off in stealth, but when enemies are tightly clustered, stealth is impossible and the game has given you a handy tool to deal with this exact problem. Just make sure you know which grenade to use and when to use them and you’ll be cleaning up Night City without ever breaking a sweat.

Recon Grenade

  • 15-meter radius.
  • Highlights enemies in the radius for 7 seconds.
  • Cuts through barriers.
  • Non-lethal.
  • No damage.

Of all the unique grenades to use, there’s precious little reason to use the highest level recon grenade over even the lowest level starting grenade. Don’t misunderstand; marking enemies is very important when clearing out large towers quietly, but there is a much better way to do it.

The ping option, with just a couple of upgrades available to everyone, only costs 1 RAM and it extends to all enemies, not just ones caught in the radius this grenade has. It lasts for much longer than 7 seconds and weighs nothing, all advantages over the grenade. The idea is to use the recon grenade while keeping a low profile, but more often than not, enemies will see and hear the grenade, thus nullifying the point of using it at all.

X-22 Flashbang Grenade

  • 6-meter radius.
  • Blinds enemies for 3 seconds.
  • Non-lethal.
  • No damage.

Three seconds is not a lot of time. The concept behind the flashbang is that you toss it in and then blast away with your weapon while the enemies can’t see anything. But almost every other grenade on this list will incapacitate or kill the enemies and save you precious ammunition in the process.

If there were a multiplayer mode, maybe it would help a squad out, but since this is a single-player game, it’s really just not that useful. The flash, for whatever reason, only affects a small area, so until this is fixed via patch, it’s best to try other options out.

EMP Grenade

  • 4-meter radius.
  • Disables electronics for 5 seconds.
  • More effective against robotic units.
  • Non-lethal.
  • Low damage.

EMPs are the stuff of horrors in post-apocalyptic literature and films, but in Cyberpunk 2077, it’s a minor nuisance at best. The first problem is that the ratio of organic to robotic life heavily favors the first group, meaning a grenade tailored to fight electronics will automatically be weaker because there simply aren’t enough circumstances in which to use it.

The damage is very low even when compared to other low damage options in the game because it’s a single burst, whereas the other low damage grenades do four or five times this damage by applying it over multiple seconds. The robots in the game will be confused and it can knock out security cameras, but quickhacks make this grenade redundant.

Molodets Biohaz Grenade

  • 4-meter radius.
  • 5-second duration.
  • Poisons enemies for 5 seconds.
  • Only applies to organic targets.
  • Non-lethal.
  • Low damage.

This is the organic-targeting equivalent of the EMP grenade and, as such, is better because there are more available units. It also does some decent damage over time, so if you can afford to chuck this in and run away, you might very well come back to a room full of bodies. They will be alive, the poison doesn’t kill them, but they’ll be very much out of the fight.

You do have to be careful to use this situationally. Against bigger enemies with lots of health, the damage is hard to notice, so save it for smaller enemies that are easy to take out. And do not use it against robots as it will not even slow them down or distract them.

Char Incendiary Grenade

  • 3-meter radius.
  • 3-second duration.
  • Burns enemies for 4 seconds.
  • More effective against organic targets.
  • Non-lethal.
  • Low damage.

The burst is small, but the effect is real and, thankfully, it works against robots and humans alike. To the latter, it’s extra effective and anybody less than a boss will probably die if they catch fire.

It’s surprisingly non-lethal, so it’s good for missions where there is a bonus for keeping the target alive (though badly singed, poor soul). It’s best used in hallways for major missions when enemies have discovered your location. Throwing this down means they’ll have to run through it to reach you, so find some cover, toss it, and wait for the melee units to try and run through it and roast themselves in the process.

F-GX Frag Grenade

  • 4-meter radius.
  • Lethal.
  • High damage.

Amazingly, there is only one high damage option for grenades. Most people tend to think of them as single, huge events. For those who want a grenade to be, you know, a grenade, give this a shot and you will not be disappointed.

Damage over time is all well and good, but even if you were to total up the damage from any of the other low damage options, they still usually only do about half of what the frag grenade does all at once. The single biggest advantage is that you won’t have enemies shooting you the entire time while they slowly die, it’ll be all over before it begins when the pin is pulled.

Gash Antipersonnel Grenade

  • 4-meter radius.
  • 5-second duration.
  • 21 lasers target enemies in the radius.
  • Lethal.
  • Moderate Damage.

What were they thinking when they added this to the game? Moderate damage is a bit misleading, it does about half of the damage of the F-GX Frag Grenade, but it applies this damage rapidly, melting enemies as soon as they realize they are being attacked.

Ignore the “Personnel” part of the name, it does damage to robots and organics alike. Nothing caught in the radius has the response time to get out alive. Even against bosses, this grenade deals damage at a rate that no other standard gun can contend with.
