Eve Online has managed to create a literal universe worth of content since it launched. Unfortunately, the one thing that CCP has yet to achieve lift-off on is the multiplayer shooter based in the Eve Online universe. It's not for the lack of trying – the developers have been trying to launch this game mode for years. However, they're still working on it.
"We recognize that a hard sci-fi FPS game set in the Eve Universe is a very popular concept and CCP is committed to offering an innovative multiplayer shooter with atmospheric visuals," CCP explained during the recent Fanfest Opening Ceremony (thanks, PC Gamer). "We want to show you rather than tell you how we have evolved this concept and we’re looking forward to doing so when the time comes to reveal the game."
Project Nova, as it was called, was initially announced in 2018 as a multiplayer shooter set in the Eve Online universe. However, it was unfortunately canceled in February 2020. Unlike most projects that year, it wasn't Covid-19 that messed up the development, but it was actually the poor reception it received during its closed alpha testing phase.
"After taking [playtesting] into account, we saw that the gameplay experience of its hands-on demo did not live up to our original vision and would not achieve our ambitious goals for the project," said George Kelion, CCP Games PR head, at the time.
Fast forward to April 2021, and Kelion officially announced that Project Nova would be getting a full reboot, bringing "significant changes in scope and direction," and a new project name as well. We still don't know what changes the dev team has been making to Nova all this while, all we know is that it's being developed at CCP's London studio, and based on the most recent announcement, they're still at it.
A game that's been on for so many years will undoubtedly get confusing, with all that information and resources. Thankfully for Eve Online players, Microsoft Excel and CCP have partnered to create a special plug-in that will specifically aid players. Players will soon be able to transport in game data directly into Excel.
