Blasts from the past don’t much more powerful than a sequel to Amiga and Atari ST classic Carrier Command by the long defunct MicroProse.
For you to know what either Carrier Command or MicroProse are you’re going to have to be a gamer of a certain age, but if you remember the days when going online involved not being able to use the landline then news of a sequel is going to be reason for a lot of excitement… probably.
The original game was first released in 1988 and was well ahead of its time with its mix of real-time strategy and vehicle simulation, as you controlled a robotic aircraft carrier roaming the seas and trying to take out another rogue carrier.
The sandbox gameplay was a revelation at a time when 3D graphics were still new but since it was a UK developed and published game it never made much of an inroad into the US and Japan, and is nowadays rarely remembered.
The game did get a British-made spiritual follow-up called Hostile Waters in 2001 though, as well as quasi-remake Carrier Command: Gaea Mission in 2012 by Czech developer Bohemia Interactive – makers of the ArmA series.
This will be the first actual sequel though and while information is sparse at the moment it seems to have the same basic set-up as the original, as you use a range of remotely piloted drones to scout out enemy emplacements and set-up bases on islands you visit.
As you may have noticed from the trailer, the graphics are not exactly mind-blowing and at this point it’s really just nostalgia that’s fuelling any interest.
Part of that is the fact that the game is being published by MicroProse, the company set-up by ‘Wild’ Bill Stealey and Sid Meier in 1982 and which published iconic simulation and strategy games including F-15 Strike Eagle, Silent Service, Civilization, and X-COM.
The MicroProse name is now owned by an Australian company and while it doesn’t control any of those old franchises it is planning to publish other similarly themed games.
