Breath Of The Wild Was Initially Tested With Japanese Landmarks

The offices belonging to Nintendo will forever be home to secrets that the gaming community may never know. However, the elusive company did at one point share rare, early footage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, featuring a Japanese Landmark instead of Hyrule Castle.

Revealed during a CEDEC conference back in 2017, Nintendo apparently showcased Breath of the Wild in its infant form. The conference did not include the public eye, nor did any footage from the presentation emerge, but a few images have surfaced recently that revealed some glorious sights. Posted by Pixelpar (founding editor of LootPots) on Twitter, an image of Link running in front of Himeji Castle has given us our first look at BOTW’s early build.

Explaining in the tweet, Pixelpar commented on Nintendo’s test version designed to help with world-building and determining the distance between various locales. What initially started as a 2D map of Kyoto spanned to include various Japanese landmarks, including Himeji Castle located in the historic city of Himeji. Popular landmarks were built into 3D models with a vast map that could have had Link roaming the great expanse of Japan.

Co-founder of Inverge Studios Vicente Quesada posted another tweet that revealed BOTW’s early inclusion of a skydiving mechanic, which appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The second post included more images of Link exploring Himeji castle, navigating through its maze-like structure, and featured Link skydiving from above the castle grounds.

The recent surfacing of these images has fanned the flame circling Breath of the Wild 2 rumors, that may not be addressed until The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary next year.
