New yearly data shows that boxed sales of video games now only account for 28% of all copies bought on consoles, thanks to the pandemic.
2020 might have been pretty awful for most people, and industries, but the video games market actually did very well out everyone being stuck at home with nothing to do, as the total market value for gaming increased by 19.6% from last year to a massive £130.3 billion this year.
The figures collected by GamesIndustry.biz reveal that for consoles, boxed sales are very much in the minority and account for just 28% of all sales – compared to 72% for digital. Add in PC and mobile and the market for boxed video games is just 9% of the global total.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to say what has been the best overall selling game of the year worldwide but FIFA 21 was number one in the UK (boxed only), Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was number one in the US, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons was top in Japan. Which is such a hilarious stereotype of each country’s tastes you can’t help but laugh.

There’s lots of other interesting data and trivia on the chart, with director’s cut Persona 5 Royal being the highest rated game on Metacritic during 2020, at 95/100.
Belated hit Among Us was the most searched for game on Google, while Fortnite was the one to generate the most column inches on websites – just a few thousand articles ahead of Cyberpunk 2077.
You might say there are relatively few surprises in the list, but we certainly didn’t expect MMO Final Fantasy 14 to be the most discussed game on Twitter, well ahead of Animal Crossing in second place.
Although we wish we could say we were surprised that 74% of the money the games industry makes comes from microtransactions – although that does include mobile gaming.
