Animal Crossing: New Horizons cleans up at Japan Game Awards

Nintendo took home seven awards from the Japan Game Awards, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons alone winning three of them.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is not just a financial success for Nintendo but is now a three-time award winner following this year’s Japan Game Awards.

Aside from earning an award for excellence, it took home the prestigious grand award, having received overwhelming support from a wide range of demographics in the general voting.

‘Because we were forced to stay home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a slow-life experience in this game in which you can do everything freely became a comfort to people all over the world,’ reads an official statement.

‘Communication with close friends through the game and interaction with other players in events went beyond the bounds of a single game, and the game showed the power of entertainment from Japan, acquiring overwhelming support from many users of all ages, from children to senior citizens, in general voting, and won both the Award for Excellence and the Grand Award with unanimity.’

The Animal Crossing development team also received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry award, which is given to those that have made a great contribution to the industry’s growth and development.

It wasn’t the only Nintendo game to bring home the gold, as Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Ring Fit Adventure, and Pokemon Sword and Shield all received an award for excellence as well, with Pokemon also taking the best sales award.
