Esports facilities and events operator Nerd Street Gamers has teamed up with Philadelphia Fusion parent Spectacor Gaming to host an all-women VALORANT tournament with sponsorship from T1 Entertainment & Sports and G FUEL. The FTW Summer Showdown will feature eight all-women teams competing for their share of a $10K USD prize pool. Seven teams will be invited directly with the final slot given to the winner of an open qualifier tournament hosted by GALorants, a women’s VALORANT discord community.
The event is part of a larger inclusion initiative launched by Spectacor Gaming in 2019 – FTW: For The Women – which aims to create advancement opportunities for women in the gaming space.
VALORANT is uniquely positioned as a new esport that can offer high-level women’s esports competition. While many games have some form of community-driven women-only initiative, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has built up a robust women’s tournament scene such that several top esports organizations such as Dignitas and Counter Logic Gaming field women’s teams. With their similarities in tactics and gameplay, CS:GO skill can translate well to VALORANT, allowing these established women’s rosters the opportunity to compete in a new, rapidly growing esports title. Earlier this year, Dignitas FE announced its intention to officially compete in both CS:GO and VALORANT.
